Fun and Interesting Things to do in Scottsdale Arizona in January


Scottsdale attracts millions of visitors every year because there are always a ton of fun and interesting things to do. All year-round, you can enjoy the fine restaurants, great shopping, museums, and more. January is a particularly great time to be in Scottsdale because some very special events take place during the first month of the new year.

Native Trails

January 8 - April 4
The Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation is back for its 13th year to help celebrate the culture of the Native American Tribes of Arizona and the Southwest. Everyone is invited to attend the free lunchtime show. It takes place on the outdoor fountain stage of the Scottsdale Center of the Performing Arts (7380 E. Second Street).

On most Thursdays and Saturdays, over the three-month period, you can enjoy the cool (for Arizona) weather and get to see the entertaining and educational Native American show. The one-hour performance runs from noon to 1:00 pm.

Get to know more about the original Americans who were Arizona's first residents. See the Hoop Dance performed by Derrick Suwaima Davis (Hopi/Choctaw), artistic director for Native Trails and seven-time hoop dance world champion. Rhythmic drumming and native music will fill the air. The shows performers include natives of the Hopi, Choctaw, Navajo, Hualapai, and San Carlos Apache tribes.

Native Trails is a multi-generational performance. On Saturdays, the very youngest performers will demonstrate the Eagle Dance, Southwest Horse Dance, and Inter-Tribal Pow Wow dances.

January's Thursday performances are on the 8th, 15th, and 22nd. January's Saturday performances are on the 10th, 17th, and 24th. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and maybe even a picnic basket to Civic Center Park and enjoy a fun and unique Scottsdale event.

Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction

January 10 - January 18
For more than 40 years, classic car owners, collectors, and automobile enthusiasts. have been coming to Barrett-Jackson Collector Car auctions. The come to sell, buy and just admire some of the world's most sought-after automobiles in the world. The cars that you see at one of these special events have been perfectly restored and maintained in almost like-new condition.

Extremely popular with the automobile community, last year's auction drew in excess of 300,000 visitors. The auction generated $113 million in sales. Cars sell in the thousands and they sell in the millions. At the 2014 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, the sum of $3.85 million was paid for a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88 2-Door Coupe.

Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. expects 2015 to be a record-breaking auction. One of the world's most noted collectors, Ron Pratte, has chosen to sell his collection at the Scottsdale event. Pratte brings a rare collection of vehicles that are worth many, many millions of dollars. The star of the show will undoubtedly be the 1966 Shelby Cobra Super Snake. The personal vehicle of legend Carrol Shelby previously sold for a world record $5.5 million. Expect the bidding for the only remaining 1966 Shelby Cobra Super Snake to be intense.

The auction runs for 9-days and is held at WestWorld (16601 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale), just a short drive from the Scottsdale Thunderbird Suites. If you are not planning on selling or buying a classic car, you can still have a fun time admiring the million dollar vehicles as they are put up for auction. You might run into some celebrities among all the millionaires that attend these auctions.

Ticket prices vary by day for spectators. Single day or single session admissions range from about $10-$60. You can get the lowest price by choosing certain days of the week and attending the twilight session. Waste Management Phoenix Open

January 26 - February 1
TPC Scottsdale is the site of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Each year, over 500,000 fans turn-out to watch 132 of the world's top players battle it out for the championship. At age 44, San Diego native and Arizona State University graduate, Phil Mickelson, is still at the top of his game. Expect Lefty to be at or near the top of the leader board as he competes against one of 2014s hottest golfers, 25 year-old, Ricky Fowler.

TPC Scottsdale includes the 18-hole Championship Course and the 18-hole Stadium Course where the Waste Management Phoenix Open will be played. When the Tournament is not taking place, you can book a tee time and play either course.

The Waste Management Phoenix Open brings hundreds of thousands of golfers to town. If you are one of those golfers and want to play a round or two of golf in January, you are in luck. Artwalk is a year-round event where you can browse the galleries in downtown Scottsdale and maybe purchase a beautiful piece of art. In January, there are a few special days. On Thursday, January 15, the 3rd Annual Collector's Artwalk takes place. As you stroll along the city blocks, you'll pass an amazing collection of classic cars and get to meet some proud and beautiful Arabian horses.

The participating galleries and artists are holding their own Super Bowl party on the day before the big game is played (in nearby Glendale).
